Vietnam 2024- Team Update 6
Our second medical /evangelism outreach of this trip was today (Saturday) at Dong Phu Church in Vinh Long province, located on an island in the Mekong Delta south of Ho Chi Minh City.
When we first arrived, Vital Links medical team leader Dr Hang (pictured below) , addressed all the volunteers with instructions and encouragement.
The Pastor has served this church since 1972! There were 39 on the team in all who served the 175 people from the island, both church members and unchurched residents nearby.
Two of our English conversation ministry (EFEC) teachers on this team, Sue & Vicki, were accompanied by their nurse English students, who wanted to come along on an outreach! (below)
We had more time to meet the volunteer medical staff (below) on the long bus and boat ride- roughly 3+ hours each way. Included today was an oncologist, a doctor with extensive experience with ultrasound technology, traditional medicine, pediatrics and family medicine, an optometrist, and a few more. In addition there were several pharmacists and nurses as well.
A genuine highlight on the drive down was when they learned and sang the song in Vietnamese (words below). It fit perfectly the whole purpose of these ALWM Vital Links outreaches, and gives the reason why these professionals, most Christian, volunteer with us this way!
They sang:
“We come from far away places. Carry a spirit of fire in your heart. Oh red fire, burn up, oh Hong fire, burn more. Let this heart be excited in love. The fire of revival is in you and me. fire continues the holy spirit forever. Let's bring light to thousands of generations. Let's bring salvation to Vietnam.”
They sang it again as we gathered in church at the end of the day taking time for prayers and good byes before our team and host church parted ways until next time!
It was a 15 hour day in all, and as I write this we are just about to the hotel! We are ready for some rest! Being a part of what our VL team does regularly through the year under the leadership of Dr Hang, and Van our project manager is a privilege and blessing!
